Greenworks 25302 Electric Mower Review

LIGHTWEIGHT AND BEST FOR MEDIUM-SIZED LAWNS

Greenworks 25302

The Greenworks 25302 is a cordless electric lawn mower. It has 10-inch high-speed twin blades as well as a 5-position lever for height adjustment. It’s light and nimble enough for you to power it across your yard easily. It’s ideal for medium-sized yards but is handy and efficient enough to mow small yards. However, it struggles to complete a big yard without needing a break to have the batteries recharged.

Design

The Greenworks 25302 is designed from a tough polymer that can withstand potential damage from repeated usage. It uses two blades to provide a smooth, uniform, and better quality cut.

It comes with two batteries: a 40V 2Ah and a 40V 4Ah. These batteries are compatible with more than 25 other Greenworks tools such as blowers and string trimmers.

Its cutting deck has a width of 20 inches. While it’s not the widest you’ll find on a mower, it still sufficiently meets the needs of the homeowner that wants to mow their lawn quickly and thoroughly. It helps reduce the passes needed to mow the lawn.

Important Point: Parts can be ordered directly from the manufacturer such as blades which is handy, and part list is available in the owners manual.

How does it look?

The 25302 mower resembles a race car due to its large wheels — with the oversized rear wheels being larger than the front wheels — and angled design. Its body is lime green with black accents.

There is a single height adjustment lever on its body, which you can use to set the mower to one of the five different cutting heights without having to adjust the wheels individually.

The mower has a foam padded handle that’s foldable for storage.

How much cutting power does the mower have?

This Greenworks mower is powered by two motors with a rating of 2.5 horsepower each. Powering the motors is a 40-volt lithium-ion battery system.

The motors drive the dual cutting blades at an RPM of up to 5,000.

2-in-1 Mowing Capabilities

This model has 2-in-1 discharge capabilities, allowing you to either collect the grass cuttings in the rear grass catcher bag or mulch the clippings as you mow to add valuable nutrients to your yard.

For mulching, you’ll need to insert the mulching plug instead of the catcher bag.

  1. Mulching Functionality

With the mulch plug inserted, the mower runs like a mulcher and throws out all the grass clippings back into your lawn. It delivers a great cut and is excellent at mulching. It even capably mulches leaves provided they haven’t built up too deep. It should do a fine job if the leaves on your lawn are just a few inches.

If you have a significant pile of leaves, it’s better to rake them down into an even layer before using the mower on them.

The 25302 also handles small sticks, twigs, acorns, and pine needles quite well. However, it won’t pick up or mulch larger branches or pine cones.

In our opinion this lawn mower does not come with the actual mulching blades so it does not deliver the same quality that a lawn mower with mulching blades would.

For bagging, you’ll need to fit the bag.

  1. Bagging Functionality

In bagging mode, the mower discharges the clippings into the bag from the rear rather than the side. The catcher bag has a capacity of 52 liters (approximately 14 gallons). The mower has an airflow tab that indicates when the catcher is full. Removing it is a breeze, as you only have to lift it off. After emptying it, you simply clip it back on, and you can continue mowing.

The bag may fail to catch all the grass clippings. This tends to happen due to two reasons:

    • The bag is full
    • The mulching plug is in the mower

The mower won’t work properly with a full bag, so you need to confirm that it isn’t full. The mulching plug will also prevent the mower from collecting the clippings, so make sure you have either the mulch plug or the bag fitted.

How does the mower work?

You can run the 25302 with just one battery or with two. If you use it with the two batteries installed, it will first draw power from the battery on the right side. When this battery runs out of charge, the mower will automatically switch to using the other battery without interrupting cutting.

The twin blades rotate in opposite directions to deliver a more even cut whether you’re mulching or bagging.

We Noticed: For best results, your battery tool should be charged in a location where the temperature is more than 45°F but less than 104°F. To reduce the risk of serious personal injury, do not store outside or in vehicles.

Autothrottle

With a built-in autothrottle, the mower senses how high or tough the grass is and automatically adjusts the power to the blades accordingly.

However, it’s worth mentioning that the mower struggles for some seconds when you reach taller or thicker grass before auto throttle kicks in and powers it up.

Size & Dimensions

The polyethylene deck construction makes this Greenworks mower lighter than the premium lawn mowers with steel decks. It’s around 40 pounds lighter than comparable gas lawn mowers.

Here are some of the important specifications and dimensions:

  • Cutting path: 20”
  • Front wheel: 7”
  • Rear wheel: 10”
  • Length: 29.2”
  • Height: 19.5”
  • Weight: 42.5 lbs.

Parts & Accessories

So what exactly do you get when you buy this lawnmower? Your purchase will include the following:

  • A Greenworks 25302 cordless mower
  • One 40V 2Ah battery
  • One 40V 4Ah battery
  • One charger
  • One mulch plug
  • One rear grass catcher bag
  • A key
  • An operator’s manual

Mowing Tests

Tests reveal that, depending on how thick and tall your grass is, this mower will last anywhere between 45 and 70 minutes when the two batteries are used in tandem. It easily mows a lawn of up to half an acre.

Setup, Usability & Storage

If you’re not a fan of too much assembly, then the 25302 has got you covered. Because no tools are required at all, setting it up is relatively effortless.

The batteries aren’t shipped fully charged, so you’ll need to charge them fully before first use. After that, all you have to do is:

  1. Unfold the folded handle and raise it into the operating position.
  2. After the handle snaps into place, tighten it by closing the lower and upper handle locks.
  3. Slide and click the batteries into position in their compartment, and then replace the battery covers.
  4. Insert the safety key into the red port next to the battery compartment.
  5. Press and hold the push-start button.
  6. Pull the bail lever back against the handle and release the button. This will start the mower.
  7. Start mowing.

You can’t adjust the handle to accommodate your height. However, you can fold it down for storage.

Does it offer great maneuverability?

While it lacks self-propelled properties, this Greenworks mower is still easy to maneuver on a yard or even small hills. That is due to its large wheels and lightweight construction.

  • We Found: When transporting or servicing unit, always remove the key and battery, since these parts can easily come off from the inlet and get lost.

Ease of storage

The mower folds down to about 14 to 16 inches. Therefore, you can place it in narrow spaces or slide it under a shelf. You can store it vertically to save on floor space. If you choose to hang it on a wall, make sure the bracket you hang it on is fixed to strong wall studs.

Maintenance

The maintenance requirements of the Greenworks 25302 mower are similar to what you’d expect with an electric lawn mower. The main tasks include:

  • Inspecting the blades and sharpening them when necessary
  • Lubricating the mower
  • Cleaning the mower after use

The mower should not be exposed to water to prevent electrical shock. After each use, remove any buildup of clippings, dirt, leaves, and other debris from the underside of the deck without using water.

Does the Greenworks 25302 offer good value?

Overall, this mower offers good value for money. While its price may be a little higher than the general market price, you’ll get two batteries and blades.

Maintenance costs are close to none. And let’s not forget that its battery life and power output are higher than that of the vast majority of the available electric mowers.

Don’t be fooled by its plastic composite housing. It can get a beating without being damaged. Also, remember the plastic components make the mower extremely light.

Should you buy the Greenworks 25302?

The 25302 mower is best suited for you if you have the following needs or characteristics:

  • Have a lawn of ½ acre or less
  • Want to mulch and cut grass with one unit
  • Don’t want sideways discharge of grass
  • Hate cords getting in your way while mowing
  • Want a mower that’s quick to start
  • Want to add to your collection of Greenworks tools

Summary

The Greenworks 25302 is a very light electric mower that offers great power and performance.

People of all ages will find it easy to maintain. While tall and thick grass will make the batteries die down faster, the mower will still cut through it without significant problems. If your lawn is large, you’ll have to stop and recharge the batteries before mowing it completely. But for lawn sizes of a ½ acre or less, it will work well and deliver an excellent mowing experience.
